Penelope
Entirely coil built, Penelope is made out of a stoneware claybody with iron, rolled into thin clay coils starting out with a footprint. The beginning footstep was her butt, building up to the breasts. Her egs were added next which was quite a feat (no pun intended). Each coil had to be blended or seamed together with tools or your fingers in one direction on the inside and the other direction on the outside - or visa versa. I then added the legs which had to be built out horizontally, very difficult as I had never done this before. I have been studying with Omar Vera - a resident artist at Lill Street Art Center teaching figure sculpture. After her entire body had been constructed, finishing her was a big decision. I wanted texture. Colored slips were added at the greenware stage and then the piece was bisqued, with the last step of adding sections of gustin shino glaze and then a crackle glaze over the entire piece. She was then thrown into a cone 10 glaze firing.
Size: 19.5"H x 19.5"W x 20"D. For the 'story' of Penelope click here.
She made her debut in May of 2004 at the 1st Annual Lill Street Advanced Ceramic Student Show and currently being shown at Studio b.
